"Teams are composed of individuals with diverging needs. Nothing less than great managers can maximize them." - (Gallup)

Supervisors and managers have the unique opportunity to influence and inspire those who work for them – and this can make all the difference in the success of your co-op. Gallup polls consistently find that 17 percent of U.S. workers are "actively disengaged" at a cost to the U.S. economy of $450-550 billion per year. The primary driver of that lost productivity? Poor supervision.

In light of these national statistics, the impending retirement wave of co-op leaders and the rapid changes occurring within our industry, NRECA has developed a program to provide co-op employees with the knowledge and skills they need to lead their teams through these changes and bolster the co-op overall.

What is the Supervisor and Manager Development Program?

The Supervisor and Manager Development Program (SMDP) is a flexible, co-op-specific education program focused on strengthening the leadership skills, knowledge and abilities needed to hire, develop and lead others, manage performance, communicate effectively and make decisions. The goal of this program is to equip co-op supervisors and managers with tools and resources to successfully lead and engage high-performing teams in support of the four mission-critical areas of safety, member satisfaction, reliability and cost control.

The courses that are a part of this program address the knowledge and skills needed by co-op staff who supervise others, including:

  • Hiring and developing others

  • Managing individual and team performance

  • Coaching and giving feedback

  • Individual and team communication

  • Workplace and employment law

  • Leading and managing change

This program is intended for co-op staff with leadership responsibilities ranging from key contributors considering a supervisory role, to new and experienced supervisors and mid-level managers. Regardless of where you are in your co-op’s supervisor and manager hierarchy, this program offers a learning plan just for you.
