The Association of Rural Electric Generating Cooperatives (AREGC) was started by the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) in 1950, when the first meeting was held in St. Louis, MO. REA acted as the host for the first four years.

The initial purpose of the association was to bring together the personnel operating REA financed power plants and allow them to gain knowledge by discussing operation and maintenance problems and solutions, while also learning about new technologies. To a great extent, this is still the purpose of the association, although management and state and federal environmental regulations have now been added as part of the meeting.
