Overview

This course gives electric cooperative directors a clear, practical introduction to nuclear energy—focused on building baseline knowledge, not advocating adoption. With a board oversight perspective, participants will learn how nuclear power works, key reactor types (including small modular reactors), and core considerations such as safety, cost, risk, regulation, and waste. The course emphasizes the board’s governance role—helping directors ask informed questions, evaluate long-term risks, and fulfill their fiduciary duties in an uncertain environment, while preparing them to communicate effectively with members and stakeholders.

Key Topics
  • Assess the drivers behind renewed interest in nuclear energy, including reliability needs, carbon emissions goals, and growing electricity demand.
  • Evaluate the opportunities and risks nuclear energy presents for electric cooperatives, including cost, timing, regulation, and public perception.
  • Recognize emerging technologies, such as small modular reactors (SMRs), and how they differ from traditional nuclear generation.
  • Apply a governance lens to nuclear discussions — identifying key questions, uncertainties, risks, and considerations for board oversight and long-term decision-making.
