Overview

This 2.5-day in-person course blends foundational concepts with hands-on experience in actual facilities, preparing participants to better serve members by diagnosing high bills, explaining energy use, and recommending cost-effective efficiency strategies. Participants will analyze metering and weather data, tour a residential site and a small commercial facility, and practice using field tools that support accurate energy assessments.

The Residential and Commercial Energy Auditing course benefits both new and experienced professionals who work with residential members or key accounts on energy use, high bills, and energy assessments. For seasoned energy staff, it serves as a valuable refresher to strengthen skills and update knowledge with current tools and practices. For newer staff, it provides a strong foundation in both the technical and communication skills needed to address member questions and build trust.

Residential focus: Build knowledge of how homes consume energy, interpret hourly data, and guide members in managing high bills. Participants will learn how to use auditing tools, assess heating/cooling equipment performance, and explain fuel cost comparisons in simple terms.

Commercial focus: Develop the ability to evaluate small commercial energy loads, identify cost drivers, and recommend energy-saving measures. Participants will practice interpreting commercial data, working with motors and lighting systems, and advising members on investments like variable frequency drive (VFDs), automation, and solar PV.

Both sections emphasize practical application—using real-world data, field trips, and tools to connect technical knowledge with cooperative member support.
