The nation’s grid security watchdog has recognized NRECA Cybersecurity Director Carter Manucy for his leadership on major initiatives that are building electric cooperatives’ cyber defenses.

Manucy received the Electricity Information Sharing and Analysis Center’s (E-ISAC) Electricity Security Service Award on Oct. 24 in Minneapolis at GridSecCon, an event hosted by the North American Electric Reliability Corp., E-ISAC and the Midwest Reliability Organization.

“This prestigious award is a remarkable achievement in cybersecurity leadership by Carter in protecting the grid and electric co-ops,” said NRECA CEO Jim Matheson.

Manucy leads a team dedicated to strengthening cybersecurity for NRECA’s more than 900 electric co-ops. His work includes leveraging federal funding, partnering with national labs and developing new programs, resources, educational opportunities, an annual conference and tools to bolster co-op cybersecurity. They include:

In his acceptance of the award, Manucy reflected on how upholding the security of the electric grid takes significant collaboration with skilled and caring individuals.

“There are so many talented and dedicated professionals in our field, many of whom I’ve had the privilege to work alongside,” he said. “No one person can secure the electric grid alone, it takes all of us working together, each playing our part, no matter how big or small.”

Angela Strickland, NRECA’s senior vice president of Business and Technology Strategies, said, “Carter’s visionary approach and unwavering commitment to developing tools and resources will support cooperatives in safeguarding their systems. We are thrilled for Carter as the recipient of this well-deserved recognition.”

Manucy joined NRECA in February 2023 after 27 years at the Florida Municipal Power Agency, where he led efforts in cyber and physical security and strategic execution of IT and OT cybersecurity measures.

Given in honor of Michael J. Assante, E-ISAC’s first leader, the award spotlights those who make significant contributions to the U.S. electric industry and demonstrate Assante’s “ability to inspire, innovate and care for the electric community.”

The first security service award was presented in 2021 to Marc Child, information security program manager at Great River Energy, a generation and transmission cooperative based in Maple Grove, Minnesota.
