Bird and other animal interactions with powerlines and substations can lead to costly outages, regulatory compliance risks, wildfire hazards, and negative public perception. With nationwide declines of avian species and potential changes to federal regulations, continued and increased scrutiny of electric industry impacts to birds is expected. This webinar series is designed to assist NRECA members with mitigating risks associated with avian interactions with electric infrastructure.

Join us on Tuesdays throughout March to discuss the applicability to transmission and distribution cooperatives and emerging avian issues. We'll introduce the NRECA Avian Protection Toolkit NEW which provides members with resources to improve system reliability, while minimizing avian interactions.

Tuesday, Mar. 10, 2020 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST

This session will provide an overview of federal laws protecting birds as well as applicable permits. We’ll also cover the basic factors that influence bird electrocution with powerlines and other electric infrastructure. Come learn new construction and retrofitting solutions for mitigating electrocution risk.

Tuesday, Mar. 17, 2020 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST

This session will cover the basic causes of bird collisions with powerlines and solutions for reducing collision risk. We’ll also discuss how voluntary Avian Protection Plans can help co-ops manage avian/powerline issues and why implementation can be beneficial.

Tuesday, Mar. 24, 2020 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST

This session will provide an overview of options to guide a co-op’s development of an avian program. We’ll unveil the NRECA Avian Protection Toolkit and APP Template, with an overview and shortcuts for using this new resource. We’ll also discuss emerging issues, trends, and practices, including for system reliability, wildfire risk, and interconnections with renewables.
