The concept of "Modern Microgrid" originated in the United States as an alternative to utilize and control a group of distributed generation assets (also known as distributed energy resources - DER) in an effective, adaptable, and optimal manner. Recognizing that it is a challenge to understand where and how they are currently deployed because their evolution has been complex and diverse, NEETRAC conducted research to examine the trends and commonalities within existing and planned microgrids. This final report aims to help utilities and manufacturers prepare properly and be ready for the integration and operability of microgrids into the existing electric grid from the utility user perspective.
