Intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), including recloser controllers, capacitor bank controllers, voltage regulators, switchgear controllers, and line sensors, all require firmware - and firmware updates are required due to material/equipment availability and technology demands. This project investigated how utilities and manufacturers handle firmware updates and the effect (magnitude and frequency) of firmware update-related issues.
