Evolving grid applications such as advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and distribution automation signal the move to a smarter grid which requires more data from more end points on a more frequent basis. A broadband backbone communications system provides the transport of data and information that is necessary to enable new technologies that optimize electric operations. This paper highlights the benefits of a broadband backbone for electric cooperatives.
