NRECA's most recent analysis of the cooperative retail fuel mix shows that electric cooperative retail sales grew by 4.1% in 2024, exceeding the average national growth rate of 2.5%. The mix of resources to meet this rising demand only shifted slightly from 2023 to 2024, with natural gas remaining the largest source of electricity, while the share of power from nuclear and renewable generation also rose. Historically low natural gas prices led to declines in coal generation in 2024, but rising demand and higher natural gas prices have led to a rebound of coal generation in 2025 and 2026.
