NRECA was a partial funder of the University of North
Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center (UND EERC) project
“Validation of the Multi Element Sorbent Trap (MEST)” for halogens. The UND EERC MEST-H analysis was believed to be a much cheaper
and less time-consuming method for measuring halogens like hydrogen chloride in
coal-fired power plant flue gas than the EPA method 26. NRECA received notification that the UND EERC MEST-H alternative test method, referred to by the EPA as alternative test method OTM-40, was approved. This advisory reviews the test methods and the benefits for cooperatives offered by the UND EERC MEST-H method.
