Hobby:

Beekeeping

How did you start beekeeping?
I visited a friend who is a beekeeper, learned about the process and fell in love.

How long have you been doing it?
My husband and son gave me a beehive in 2020 for my birthday.

How did you get started?
I ordered bees and researched how to start a hive. The first batch left the hive within the first two weeks, which is quite common for first-time beekeepers.

Why did they leave?
It’s hard to determine why they leave or where they go. My second hive stuck around for six months.

How long does it take for a hive to produce honey?
It can take anywhere from one to six months to get honey from the hive. Sometimes, you may not get any honey for the entire first year.

What do you enjoy most about beekeeping?
I like checking on the bees, refilling their sugar water and watching them interact. I really enjoy watching the honeycomb grow.

How did you hear about the job at Georgia EMC?
A friend at Georgia Magazine told me about the opening.

What were you doing before you joined the co-op?
I was a writer/editor at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the largest pediatric hospital in the country.

What do you like about working at the co-op?
The people are the kindest and most helpful people I’ve ever worked with.

Education:
I majored in print journalism and minored in English at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).

What else do you like doing in your free time?
I love fishing and spending time with friends and family outdoors.

Something most people don’t know about you:
I was a misdemeanor probation officer for two years and I donated a kidney to a stranger in 2018.
