NRECA filed comments in two open dockets with DOE concerning how it should implement on the Defense Production Act (DPA) authority extended to the agency by President Biden back in June. The first set of comments – filed jointly with APPA and EEI – urges DOE to prioritize action under DPA for transformers and grid components. Until we can alleviate the current shortages facing cooperatives, it will be difficult to accomplish other goals envisioned by the Biden administration on electrification. The second set of comments urges DOE to reconsider its plan to use $250 million in funding from the reconciliation bill on heat pumps, and to instead put the funding toward solving the immediate challenges in procuring distribution transformers.
