Electric co-ops are facing an increasingly transient and aging workforce, placing a greater need for effective succession planning. Succession planning is a systematic approach to analyze and plan for the future transitional workforce needs. Our approach proactively assesses leadership transitional risk, critical job roles and talent capabilities and helps cooperatives actively plan for future workforce needs consistent with the organization’s strategic direction. We emphasize effective succession planning to minimize the impacts from the pending risk of losing critical knowledge, specialized talents, and essential leadership capabilities. Successful succession plans give attention to critical skills required for key positions; assess the workforce risk factors for succession; and focuses on strategies to address critical gaps.
