Description

This study reviews and documents:

  • Available battery technology proven for stationary substation applications;

  • Good practices for battery maintenance and their alignment with NERC requirements;

  • Functionality of available battery monitoring systems used by electrical utilities, economic justification for their use, and the experiences of utilities sin using such systems;

  • End of life/replacement criteria for batteries used by utilities; and

  • Good practice for station battery system design, construction and procurement.

Value to Electric Cooperatives

Station battery systems are one of the most critical substation and generation station assets.  Co-ops can leverage the extensive literature search and survey of utilities documented in this report to learn best practices for using these systems.
