Over the last few years there have been many more photovoltaic (PV) and windpowered systems with inverters installed on electric systems. These distributed energy resources (DER) operate in continuous parallel with the utility when they are producing power.

This growth trend in small scale DER elevates the need to understand safety features of inverters, the applicable safety standards, and how standards bodies are grappling with addressing DER for the future.
