How did you first start canoeing and how did you get interested in it?
My dad bought a cheap canoe for my sister and I. After learning to paddle around in the small pond in the backyard, my dad suggested we try making it to Lake Madison, about 8 miles away. When we eventually made it to the open waters of Lake Madison and paddled to the boat ramp, I knew this was an experience I'd want to have again and again.
What's something people should know before they give it a try?
There's an amazing community of people who will help you along, give you guidance and off er the shirt off their back. Connecting with the South Dakota Canoe & Kayak Association was so fun because everyone wants to share knowledge and experience to help the up-and-coming paddlers.
How does your love for the outdoors impact your work at SDREA? Any lessons that seem to translate really well?
My love for the outdoors helps me stay connected to the communities SDREA serves. So much of rural South Dakota life is tied to the land and weather, and that perspective matters in this job. It reminds me that the work we do is ultimately about people and places, not just policy and messaging.
What do you like most about working for an electric co-op?
I like the community aspect. People engage with the magazine and their co-op, which makes me feel like my work connects with people and matters. It's nice to work toward a good mission.
Advice for other new co-op employees?
Get involved! Go to events. Travel and meet people and lean on those connections and perspectives when you need to. Everyone wants to help you succeed!
