Erik Lundorf has a diverse creative background that he can't wait to apply to the co-op world, from public murals to book writing and illustration, graphic design and more. He says any free time he has usually goes into creating visual art.
Outside of work, Lundorf enjoys spending time with his wife and their identical 5-year-old twin boys. The boys are very excited to use dad’s artistic skills to draw various types of monster trucks.
A gallery of Lundorf’s work is at the bottom of this article.
Your creative background spans everything from murals to book illustration—what’s one project you’re especially proud of, and why?
I made a mural that lives inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse [home of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers and WNBA’s Indiana Fever]. It’s a large crowd scene depicting the evolution of the Indiana High School basketball fanbase over the course of 100 years. I did a ton of research during the 7-month long project. I felt like I was really bonding with the history of my community and it was so rewarding. Plus, loving the Pacers also helps!
How do you see your artistic side influencing the work you’ll do at the co-op?
I love narrative work. I love making art that tells stories. From educating the public using imagery and infographics to providing a voice for the incredible individuals that make up co-op territories, there are countless noteworthy stories to tell in the electric co-op world.
Between murals, books and design work, what’s your favorite medium to create when you have free time?
I make comic books. There’s a little bit of everything in comics—page design, illustration, writing, color, etc. I usually draw illustrations using a brush dipped in ink. Lately I’ve been making comics for kids. I’d love to make comics for the co-op world if it makes sense.
What do your twin boys think of your art—are they budding artists too?
We’ve created quite an array of monster trucks. They come up with the ideas, I draw them and they color them. There must be close to 30 now. I drew an “excavator monster truck” the other day. I drew a bee monster truck, a fish monster truck, the possibilities are endless.
Your Instagram gives a great look into your style—how would you describe your artistic aesthetic in three words?
Conceptual, cartoon, intentional.
What were you doing before you joined the co-op?
I worked for a beer distribution company where I did graphic design and co-managed their in-house print shop. It was a blast and it enabled me to build my portfolio to land an awesome gig at the co-op.
What are you most looking forward to as you combine your passion for creativity with the electric co-op industry?
The electric co-op industry puts a huge emphasis on continual learning and career growth. Since I started, I’ve already significantly increased my design skillset doing day-to-day design tasks as well as participating in educational opportunities such as the Connect Conference, one-on-one training sessions with industry professionals and more. I look forward to the immersive learning opportunities to come. The potential for growth is so exciting.
What do you enjoy most about working for an electric co-op?
Impossible to narrow down, but I love how driven and intelligent everyone is; they truly care about their mission and the community surrounding it.
Any words of advice to new co-op employees?
Take it all in! So much to learn. You’ll be a better person in no time.
