On January 28, 2022, NRECA filed comments with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to advocate on behalf of electric cooperatives and the communities they serve as DOT shapes new programs established in the 2021 infrastructure law. DOT is establishing two new programs to fund EV charging infrastructure: a $5 billion formula program that will be managed by the states and a $2.5 billion community grant program that DOT will administer. NRECA urged DOT to (1) ensure co-ops are part of the planning process for any projects funded by DOT because of potential grid impacts and (2) to prioritize funding for rural and underserved communities so they aren't left behind in the electrification of the transportation sector.
