The power distribution grid is undergoing a fundamental transformation driven by the rapid adoption of technologies, such as smart grids, digitization, and artificial intelligence, as well as changes in customer behavior and system complexity due to new types of loads and generation sources. The distribution grid is transitioning from a passive, unidirectional system to a more active, distributed, and bidirectional system. These shifts are reshaping how electricity is produced, delivered, and managed and creating new operational challenges that require co‑ops to rethink how they plan, protect, and control their systems.
The following information and resources aim to assist cooperatives in understanding how our industry is changing and to pursue measures to protect their operations and the grid.

Join the Grid Protection and Control Task Force
We invite co-op members to join our Grid Protection Initiative Task Force. This advisory committee will work with NRECA to provide guidance on Protection and Control (PAC) initiatives, review and provide feedback on our drafted reports, and explore case studies and pilot implementation opportunities.
