Cooperative Rate Structures

Seven Case Studies

Changing kWh consumption, consumer interest, increasing DER penetration, state policy changes, and other policy initiatives are having a significant impact on how electric cooperatives do business. The significant financial and strategic implications of these new realities are compelling many cooperatives to revisit traditional ratemaking models to ensure that rates allow co-ops to fairly recover their costs and margins and meet consumer needs while maintaining reliable, affordable, safe, and sustainable energy services.

The following seven case studies were created to illustrate some of the innovative ways in which cooperatives are reassessing their rate structures to better fit the needs of their member-consumers.
