There are new opportunities for co-ops to work with the largest single consumer of energy and oil on the planet - the U.S. military.
NRECA's Cooperative Research Network (CRN) presented a live 90-minute web conference titled “Opportunities with Military Bases: Renewables, Utility Privatization, and Microgrids.” Guests, Robert E. Tritt, partner, and Justin M. Ganderson, associate, from McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP, discussed eligibility, benefits, common hurdles, tracking, and contract acquisition strategies for successful engagement with military facilities. And guest Nivin Elgohary, vice president of Public-Private Partnerships at CoBank, guided members through the financing process, while highlighting some of the opportunities and challenges that come with financing military base infrastructure and service contracts. The session also included co-op success stories from Eston Glover, Pennyrile Electric (Ky.), who shared benefits and challenges with a utility energy services contract; and Lou Ann Phillips and Mike Wasson of Canoochee EMC (Ga.) who talked about their co-ops' experience with base privatization.
